Macquarie Musical Society (MacMS) is a society dedicated to musical theatre. Typically we produce between three and five shows a year ranging from student written to professional productions in the Lighthouse Theatre (W11A) on Macquarie University’s North Ryde campus, and in 2016 we celebrate our 13th year!
Macquarie Musical Society is affiliated with Macquarie University and is run by Macquarie University students. We elect a new executive each year to fill the roles of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Co-ordinator, Production Manager, Publicity Officer, General Officer and Junior General Officer.
At MacMS we encourage all people to get involved in any way possible. If you enjoy singing, dancing, acting, playing music or just the spotlight, we encourage you to audition. However MacMS is not only for the musically talented. Our tech and backstage crew are always looking for a helping hand with building, lighting operation, sound operation and rigging, and we also offer experience in front of house, costume design and creation and all elements of a production team such as Directing, Producing, Choreographing and Music Directing.
All roles are filled by members passionate about musical theatre, and if you share this passion we invite you to be a part of our society. Whether it’s as a fun hobby at university or a stepping stone for a future career we look forward to seeing you around the theatre!
Our O Week show consisted of a double billing. From the heart wreck of The Last Five Years to the hilarity of Gutenberg! The double billing ensured a night of emotional whiplash.
Have you ever sat in a bar and wondered about the stories of those sitting around you?
Jukebox - The Musical is an exciting new ‘slice of life’ musical. Set entirely in one bar on its closing night, we peek into the conservations of each of the characters and piece together their stories. Featuring songs by Passenger, Ed Sheeran, Panic! At the Disco, Sawyer, The Temper Trap and an original script, Jukebox is sure to capture your heart and ignite your imagination.
Bare follows the senior year of St. Cecilia’s graduating class, but mainly the romantic relationship of two students, Peter and Jason. While most of the class has to deal with everyday problems like homework, drugs, alcohol, sexual desires and memorizing lines for Romeo and Juliet, Peter and Jason must decide the best path to follow.
MacMS proudly announces the return of 10080 Minutes! The challenge to write, compose, direct and stage a brand new short musical in just one week. This September take up the mantle and engage in the exciting and fast paced week of musical innovation.
Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La Bohème, Rent follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village. The group’s dreams, losses, and love stories weave through the musical’s narration to paint a stunningly raw and emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City in the late 1980s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
